Why do I call this Basil Pesto? The word pesto comes from the Italian word pestare, meaning to pound or crush, in reference to the original method of preparation, with a mortar and pestle. So… Pesto can be made from herbs other than basil.
Mind blowing, right?
Ingredients for Basil Pesto Recipe:
4 cups fresh basil leaves
3 cloves garlic
1/3 cup toasted pine nuts or walnuts
2/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese
1/3 – 1/2 cups olive oil
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
few cracks black pepper
Makes about 1 cup Basil Pesto. All ingredients are approximate and optional. It’s YOUR Pesto! Watch the Presto! Pesto! Video for added instruction and singing. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Add all ingredients to a blender and pulse until desired consistency.
